This region consists of two counties, Penobscot and Piscataquis.
Penobscot County is named for the Penobscot river, which is famous
for its great whitewater rafting.
One of Maine's largest cities, Bangor is located in Penobscot County.
It hosts a civic center, Bangor International Airport, and is the regional center for medical facities. Another Penoboscot town, Orono, is home to the
University of Maine's primary campus.

Home to Baxter State Park and Maine's highest mountain, Katahdin, Piscataquis County has a low population (17,000) and is heavily rural. Katahdin marks one end of the Appalachian
Trail and is the central point of Baxter State Park, a 202,064 acre
park established in 1930 to preserve a slice of Maine's wilderness
for generations. Along with the Moosehead Lake area, this region
offers much in terms of scenery and outdoor recreation.
